Around the end of September, I found a tiny article on CNN.

The tiny mountain village of Corippo, arranged higgledy-piggledy on the green slopes of southern Switzerland’s Verzasca valley, looks like something out of a fairytale.

But here, in what is Switzerland’s smallest municipality, the citizens are facing a harsh reality.

南スイスのベルザスカ渓谷にごちゃごちゃと家が立ち並ぶ小さな山村は童話に出てくるようなところだ。

What was once a thriving farming community of around 300 people has dwindled to just 12 residents, 11 of whom are over 65.

スイスで最も小さな自治体であるここは厳しい現実に直面している。

かつては３００人ほどの豊かな農村であったが、現在ではたったの１２人に減少し、そのうちの１１人は６５歳以上である。

Today, the only economic activity in the town is the local osteria, a rustic restaurant.

 現在この町の唯一の経済的活動はオステリア、素朴なレストランだけである。

Here, in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, not far from Lacarno, Corippo’s slate-roofed buildings, built from local Ticino granite, have remained largely untouched for centuries — but it’s now on the verge of becoming a ghost town.

このラカルノからそう遠くないスイスでもイタリア語を話す地域の、コリッポのスレート葺きの建物はこの地域でとれるTicino 花崗岩でできており、何世紀も手付かずのままであるが、今やゴーストタウンになる一歩手前である。

However, all’s not lost. A local foundation, Fondazione Corippo 1975, has come up with a novel way to save the village: Corippo is set to become the country’s first “albergo diffuso,” or scattered hotel.

しかし全てが失われたわけではない。地元の団体Fondazione Corippo 1975 が村を救う新しい方法を思いついた。コリッポがスイス初の「albergo diffuso アルベルゴ・ディフーゾ」散らばったホテル、である。

The Albergo Diffuso, an innovative concept of hospitality, was launched in Italy in the early 1980s as a means of reviving small, historic Italian villages and town centres off the usual tourist track.

アルベルゴ・ディフーゾはホスピタリティーの革新的な概念で、通常の観光ルートから外れた小さい歴史的なイタリアの村や町の中心部を再活性させる手段として1980年代初頭にイタリアで始まった。

It has to conform to the following conditions:

• Run directly by an individual owner and providing normal hotel services

• Rooms distributed in existing converted buildings in historic centres

• Central reception area with food available

• Part of a genuine community so that guests can be part of local life

・それぞれの家の持ち主が経営し、通常のホテルのサービスを提供する

・歴史的な町の中心部にある改装された既存の建物の中に部屋が点在

・中心のレセプションエリアで食事ができる

・客が地域の生活の一部になれるよう実際に存在しているコミュニティーであること

過疎になった町が、家に手を入れて人が来るようになったら素晴らしい！ただ、日本では家がスイスのように石造りではないので、傷みが激しいと修復にコストがかかりすぎ難しいかなぁ。

Many students went abroad this summer and one of them, Tsukimi, shared her experience of going to Cambridge in the UK with us. This was not only her first trip abroad but her first time to get on the airplane!

She was in Cambridge for 18 days. The reason she applied for the program was to improve her English skill. Among the many things she told me, she said watching a film without the subtitles was fun and at the same time a good listening practice. The English people were kind and the town was beautiful. It was much colder than here in Japan. She ate a lot of potatoes and fish and chips. Next time she goes to the UK, she wants to visit London as she didn’t have time to go there this time.

今年の夏もたくさんの生徒さんが日本を飛び出しました。高校２年生のTちゃんはイギリス、ケンブリッジの英語研修プログラムに参加しました。彼女にとっては初めての外国というだけでなく、なんと飛行機に乗るのも初めてでした。

１８日間のケンブリッジ体験。ケンブリッジの街は美しく、人は親切。字幕なしで見る映画はとってもいいリスニングの勉強になりました。日本の夏よりもずっと涼しく、たくさんポテトを食べ、有名なフィッシュアンドチップスも食べました。ちょっと油濃こかったかな。次にイギリスに行くことがあったら今回行けなかったロンドンに行きたいそうです。

英語を勉強していて、実際に英語を話している国で生活してみるといろんな発見や感動があったことでしょう。いつもレッスンでは正しい英語を話すことを心がけているTちゃん。小学校の頃から諫早から毎週長与まで来てエスタミネーで真剣にレッスンを続けていますが、この経験でますます英語の勉強に拍車がかかることでしょう。Way to go T-chan!! Thank you very much for sharing your experience!

過去２週間通常クラスに加えて私は２０時間以上、奈美ちゃんも相当数の夏休み集中講座をこなしその合間にあったのが恒例のエスタミネー英語教室サマーキャンプ。怒涛のような毎日でしたが、今年は２８名のちびっ子たちの参加で疲れも吹き飛ぶ楽しさでした。子供って本当に素晴らしい！

全員一斉に外に出るには暑すぎる〜。他のチームが外で宝探ししている間は中で弾けよう！

これも恒例のウオーターバルーン。超楽し〜い！！

ビショビショになった後は、中でクッキング：）今日はワッフルとアイスクリーム作り。上にかけるチョコソースも自分で作ってみよう。

アイスとワッフルおいしかった〜！

さ、次はエジプト学者の（本当です！）Stephen先生からピラミッド作りを教わろう。

ピラミッドを作るビルダーと絵を描くペインターチームにそれぞれ別れて作業。みんなの目がキラキラして本当に楽しかったね〜。ピラミッドってこんな風になっているんだってみんな一生忘れないと思うよ！

やった〜！完成したよ〜！

その後はキーホールダー作り。自分の好きな絵を描いてみよう。

本当に忘れられない夏の一コマになったエスタミネーのサマーキャンプ。みんな長時間本当にがんばりました：）

準備に多くのエネルギーとクリエイティビティ、時間を費やしたスタッフのみんな、本当にありがとうございました！

So many activities, but kids did not give up and they were really engaged all the way through. It was a very fun day. Thanks to the staff members for all the hard work!!

It was the Atomic Bomb Memorial Day here in Nagasaki yesterday. My friend Tomoko who has been doing a lot of volunteer work for the city in many different ways and also visited Chernobyl in April as a special anti-nuclear ambassador asked me to be a translator for the ambassador of Ukraine Dr. Ihor Kharchenko to show around some sites related to the bomb around the city.

きのうは長崎原爆記念日。長崎の中でも特に原爆の被害の濃い浦上地区で育った私ですが、長崎の文化財を守ることに奔走したり、４月には非核特別大使としてウクライナのチェルノブイリやその他の都市に視察に行った高校の後輩のTomokoちゃんより依頼され短い時間ですが、駐日ウクライナ特権全権大使イーホル・ハルチェンコ氏の通訳をしました。

The pictures above were drawn by the children in Ukraine displayed by the river just by the hypocenter. This particular exhibit is called ‘Kids’ Guernica’ after the original anti-war mural-sized painting ‘Guernica’ by Pablo Picasso.

キッズゲルニカという、無差別爆撃の非人道性を描いたピカソの「ゲルニカ」と同じサイズの世界中の子供達の平和の願いを描いた絵が原爆公園横の下の川に展示されています。上の絵はウクライナの子供達が描いたもの。

長崎歴史文化博物館のおきあがりこぶしの展示。ウクライナ出身の元サッカー選手アンドリー・シェフチェンコやウクライナの子供たちやその他日本の著名人などの作品が並ぶ。コウノトリはウクライナの平和の象徴だそうです。

At the war shelter by the museum where the Nagasaki Prefecture Office was located at the time of the bomb. The telegram notifying of the bomb was sent to Tokyo from here.

博物館横の防空壕。原爆落下当時は長崎県庁があり、ひんやりした中には知事室や公安部長の部屋などがありました。ここから東京に原子爆弾が落ちた旨の電報が打たれたという。
