ベン・コーベット Ben Corbet
私の名前はベン・コーベットです。日本に来ておよそ5年になります。私の出身はイギリス南部のアイル・オブ・ワイト（ワイト島）ですが、子供のとき2年間マルタ（地中海の国）と、6年間フランスの南部で過ごし、そこで高校を卒業しました。大学入学のためイギリスにもどり、大学では社会学と英語を専攻しました。卒業後は様々な仕事を経験しました。たとえばトマト摘み、フランスの南部での家の改築、ライフガードや会社の総務課など、そして英語が母国語でないヨーロッパ人に英語を教えることです。
日本に来てからは、合気道を習い、現在2段の腕前で、子供たちに教えています。私はアウトドアーが好きで、写真を撮ったり、料理、とりわけイタリアンやインド料理を作るのが好きです。
今までの人生で様々な国に住む機会があったということは大変ラッキーだったと思います。というのは言葉を習得する一番の方法はその言葉が話されている国に住むことだからです。それでは、自分の国にいて、学ぼうとする言語のネイティブスピーカーとの接触が大変限られている場合、どうしたらその言葉を話したり聞いたりすることが上手になるのでしょうか？どの言語を習得するときも同じですが、文法と語彙がそのカギとなります。しかし実際のコミュニケーションとなるとあなた自身が発音やイントネーション、そしてリスニング力を駆使しなければなりません。スピーキングで一番大事なことは間違いを恐れないことです。むしろその間違いから学び、あまり自意識過剰にならないことです。リスニングの上達にはとにかくなるべく多くターゲットとしている言語を聴くことです。今日では音楽や英語、そしてもちろんインターネットなど身近に多くの教材があります。自分が関心のあるトピックを選ぶとやる気も持続します。
わたしが皆さんにできるアドヴァイスとして、スピーキングとリスニングの上達のコツはチャンスがあったらとにかく英語をできるだけたくさん聴き、聴いたことをまねして言ってみることです。

My name is Ben Corbett and I’ve been working and living in Japan for almost five years. I’m from the Isle of Wight in southern England, but I spent two years living in Malta as a child and also six years in southwest of France where I completed my secondary education before moving back to the UK to attend college, where I studied Sociology and English language. After finishing my education, I had the opportunity to experience many different kinds of work, including tomato picking, renovating houses in the south of France, lifeguarding, and management work, as well as teaching English as a foreign language to European students. Since coming to Japan I have been practicing Aikido and now have my second-dan grade and participate in teaching children’s classes. I love the outdoors, taking photos, and enjoy cooking, especially Italian and Indian food.
I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to live in various countries, which is probably the best way to learn a foreign language, but how can people who study in their home country improve their speaking and listening skills when they only have limited contact with native speakers? As with any language, the key to understanding lies in grammar and vocabulary, but actual communication requires you to employ your listening skills as well as pronunciation, intonation, etc. The most important thing when speaking is not worry about, and instead, learn from your mistakes and not be self-conscious.
Improving your listening skills requires you to expose yourself to as much of the foreign language as possible, which nowadays can be easily done using music, movies, and of course, the internet. Try and pick a subject you enjoy to keep you motivated. My biggest piece of advice to improve speaking and listening is this; listen to as much as you can and mimic what you hear, when the opportunity arises.
