It was the Atomic Bomb Memorial Day here in Nagasaki yesterday. My friend Tomoko who has been doing a lot of volunteer work for the city in many different ways and also visited Chernobyl in April as a special anti-nuclear ambassador asked me to be a translator for the ambassador of Ukraine Dr. Ihor Kharchenko to show around some sites related to the bomb around the city.

きのうは長崎原爆記念日。長崎の中でも特に原爆の被害の濃い浦上地区で育った私ですが、長崎の文化財を守ることに奔走したり、４月には非核特別大使としてウクライナのチェルノブイリやその他の都市に視察に行った高校の後輩のTomokoちゃんより依頼され短い時間ですが、駐日ウクライナ特権全権大使イーホル・ハルチェンコ氏の通訳をしました。

The pictures above were drawn by the children in Ukraine displayed by the river just by the hypocenter. This particular exhibit is called ‘Kids’ Guernica’ after the original anti-war mural-sized painting ‘Guernica’ by Pablo Picasso.

キッズゲルニカという、無差別爆撃の非人道性を描いたピカソの「ゲルニカ」と同じサイズの世界中の子供達の平和の願いを描いた絵が原爆公園横の下の川に展示されています。上の絵はウクライナの子供達が描いたもの。

長崎歴史文化博物館のおきあがりこぶしの展示。ウクライナ出身の元サッカー選手アンドリー・シェフチェンコやウクライナの子供たちやその他日本の著名人などの作品が並ぶ。コウノトリはウクライナの平和の象徴だそうです。

博物館横の防空壕。原爆落下当時は長崎県庁があり、ひんやりした中には知事室や公安部長の部屋などがありました。ここから東京に原子爆弾が落ちた旨の電報が打たれたという。
